Once home to sprawling sugar plantations, this remote hamlet on the southern-most
tip of Maui is a calming escape from
the hectic pace of mainland life.
Surrounded by lush rainforests and idyllic
waterfalls, it draws visitors from around the world captivated by the aloha
spirit and sensational beaches.
Shimmering lagoons beckon swimmers and sunbathers, including the
Waioka Pools and Hamoa Beach. In addition, stunning underground
caves, ideal for exploring are mere minutes away. In 1944, Paul Fagan founded
the Hana Ranch, a sprawling cattle farm, spanning 14,000 acres (5,556 ha).
Guided tours are still available.
The drive along the Hana
Highway affords spectacular views and the chance to ease into the slow island
pace. Famed aviator Charles Lindebergh spent his last days in Hana and his final
resting place is just outside town. The Hana Cultural Center and Museum
provides insight into the fascinating Polynesian history and culture and hosts
a variety of community events throughout the year.
From November to May, humpback whales may be spotted in the bay as they breed
before making their annual migration up north.
